A simpler beach-house weekend

A small hosting checklist: cold drinks, shared food and room to change the plan.

Prepare the things that make guests comfortable: chilled drinks, water, an alcohol-free option, enough glasses and a simple meal. Leave the rest of the afternoon open.

Before anyone arrives

Chill unopened cans ahead of time. Put water and alcohol-free drinks in the same easy-to-reach place. Keep ice for glasses separate from the cooler used to chill cans.

Offer both Beach House flavours if you can, with the labels visible. Each is 355 ml at 5% alc./vol.; guests should know what they are choosing.

Give dinner one easy centrepiece

A tray of tacos or grilled vegetables can anchor the meal. Put toppings on the table so guests can choose their own combinations. A lime wedge is optional for the drink; the citrus and salt are already in the recipe.

Have a rain plan, not a full itinerary

Clear a covered table, bring out a deck of cards and choose a playlist. The afternoon does not need to be a production.

Arrange safe rides before drinking, and leave swimming, driving and other activities for when everyone is sober. A good host makes it easy for guests to enjoy the gathering at their own pace.
